Kitchen cabinets are an important part of any kitchen, and are a crucial part of the decision-making process in any kitchen remodeling project.  But, with so many different styles and types of cabinets to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones are the best for your needs. Here are three tips for selecting the best kitchen cabinets.

CONSIDER YOUR Kitchen Cabinet BUDGET

This might not be the FUN part of getting new kitchen cabinets, but it is crucial to understand your budget before beginning your cabinetry journey.  There are a lot of variables that influence pricing in a cabinet project, so it’s important to understand your price range before the options come your way and decisions need to be made.

That said, kitchen cabinets come in a variety of different price points, so you should be able to find one that fits your budget.

One of the biggest variables that will impact the price of your cabinets is whether you are going with stock cabinets, or opting for a custom kitchen cabinet project.  Stock cabinets are a very standard option for most home owners that will improve the design and appearance of the kitchen.  Custom cabinets on the other hand can be fully customized by the homeowner to fit their specific preferences and particular designs of the home.  Custom cabinet projects have a significantly higher price tag associated with them, but are worth every penny if the budget allows for it.

Some of the other variables that impact price are material, design, size, color/finish, and labor and installation.

No matter what your budget is, it’s important to choose kitchen cabinets that fit your needs. So consider your storage needs, style preferences, and material choices when selecting the best kitchen cabinets for your home.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT STYLE Cabinets FOR YOUR HOME

This may seem like the obvious answer here, but let’s not overcomplicate this.  When deciding on the style of kitchen cabinets to go with, choose the style that best matches your home.  There is an ever-growing list of possible styles, including shaker, traditional, rustic, country, slab, modern, and the list goes on and on and on…

It can seem overwhelming, but it helps to take a step back, and look at the decor and style of the rest of your house.  What style of cabinets best matches the rest of the house?  In most cases, this simple exercise will help a decision become more obvious.  But in some cases, you could find yourself in a bit of a “gray area” and be in between two styles.  Will the country style cabinets look best, or should we go glass-front?  In these cases, it helps to keep in mind the overall goal for the aesthetic of the house.  Sometimes this can help make one option seem better than another.

If you still find yourself having a hard time deciding on the right style for your home, it may be best to refer to a cabinet designer or kitchen remodeler to get their opinion on the proper design choice for your home.

KNOW YOUR WOOD TYPE AND COLOR

Kitchen cabinets are available in a variety of materials, but the most popular type of kitchen cabinet is wood. Wooden cabinets come in a variety of colors and styles, so it’s important to choose the right wood type, color and style for your home.

To choose the right color, you first need to know your wood type. There are five popular types of wood used for kitchen cabinets: pine, hickory, cherry, maple, and oak. Of the five types, pine, oak, and hickory are cheaper and more readily available.  Cherry and maple are more durable wood types and have a more luxurious look. Cherry cabinets are red in color, maple and pine cabinets are light brown in color, and oak and hickory cabinets are dark brown in color.

Out of the 5 wood types, maple is the most commonly used and is considered the industry standard due to its durability and smooth uniform grain. These qualities make maple an excellent choice for cabinets that are going to be stained or painted. The durability ensures that the wood will stand up to the test of time, and the smooth uniform grain allows the paint or stain to be applied evenly.

Once you know your wood type, it’s time to choose the right color. If you have a traditional home, go with a traditional color like cherry or maple. If you have a modern home, go with a modern color like white or black.

BONUS TIP: WORK WITH A QUALIFIED CONTRACTOR TO INSTALL YOUR NEW Kitchen CABINETS

When you’re ready to install your new cabinets, it’s important to work with a qualified contractor. A qualified contractor will ensure that your cabinets are installed properly and that they look great in your kitchen.

There is a lot that goes in to installing new kitchen cabinets, and working with a qualified contractor ensures that the project gets done correctly the first time.  Two of the most common mistakes that we see with people who DIY their kitchen cabinets is mis-measurement and not getting the cabinets level or lined up correctly.  Both of these can turn into MASSIVE headaches.
